In the early beginnings of a nonprofit, there is usually the story of one visionary or team of people that have a huge passion for something that means so much to them. I recently met the one of the founders of Make-A-Wish Frank Shankwitz and became inspired about what he did, and it was because of the story he told.

Chris Greicius and Frank Shankwitz

The Make-A-Wish Foundation began in 1980 when a 7-year-old Phoenix, Arizona boy with leukemia wanted to be a police officer. A group of officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety granted Chris Greicius his wish by giving him a custom-made uniform, helmet, badge, and even a helicopter ride.

The Foundation’s first donation was $15 from a grocery store manager. He pulled the money from his wallet after Shankwitz, who was working off-duty as an undercover security officer at the store, told him about the story of Chris and how they made the boys last days full of joy and that if this one boy’s wish could create such happiness, maybe they could do the same for other children. This story started one of the most beloved foundations in existence today. To read more about the first wish, please click here.

What story does your nonprofit have, and how can you connect with the right people to tell this story to build awareness and donations. With the tools and the popularity of social media, you can begin to craft your story over Facebook, Twitter and other platforms to engage your audience and make them supporters. Done right, these new supporters will re-tell your story to their network of friends and family, increasing your reach exponentially.

Are you telling your story effectively on the web?

It is really neat to see this. It clearly shows that Twitter has an older demographic. But, as Digital Surgeons points out, “Facebook is much larger with 500 million users compared to Twitter’s 106 million, but did you know that 52 percent of Tweeters update their status every day while only 12 percent of Facebook users do the same? How about the fact that half of Twitter’s users are in college compared to only 28 percent of Facebook users.”

We see that clients are starting to “wake up” and know they need social media but are still unsure of how to use it. We show them how to use it efficiently and effectively.

If your business is selling products and/or services, social media marketing is an important marketing channel that will increase your visibility in the social community. Studies have shown that people are now going to the web and learning and studying more and more about these products or services BEFORE they actually buy. Part of their research is also reading other comments and looking for companies that are transparent , contribute and participate in social settings.

We help incorporate social media into clients or company’s existing content strategy. This allows us to do three things; shifting conversations to a different medium; allowing for easier updating of content; and reaching a wider audience. We show them how they can be communicating more efficiently with people and how it ties into their existing content and how social media can drive static web content to new destinations.

We get the question all the time – “Should we have a company blog?” We always say yes and explain all the benefits of having a blog. But were our recommendations correct, real and able to be backed up by hard figures that showed the benefits of a company having a blog? We wanted to know.

Recently, we began looking at the metrics of companies that have a blog verses ones that don’t and were quite amazed with the statistics. Blogging is showing to be a benefit to businesses that sell to consumers (B2C) as well as businesses that focus sales to other businesses (B2B).

As we suspected, there is a dramatic increase in monthly leads for businesses that blog and sell to consumers. But we were surprised with the amount of median monthly leads that businesses selling to other businesses benefited from blogging as well. This is a strong indicator that B2B should have a blogging presence.

But what social media channels are most effective whether your business focuses on B2B or B2C? As suspected, the businesses that focus on consumer are having great success using Facebook and business to business companies have more success using LinkedIn, which is more of a business oriented network. But both B2B and B2C companies have the second most success in acquiring customers using a company blog.

The next question we get a lot is how often to blog. While we feel it is up to the business owners how often they think their blog needs updating, we wanted to see how often businesses were blogging. According to HubSpot, the sweet spot for blogging has been posting weekly, with more businesses doing it this year than last. And a lot of businesses are posting 2-3 times a week.

The data is clear, whether you are a company focusing on B2B or B2C, having a company blog is a great way to attract leads and customers.
